Verbal manifestations of metacognitive and social cognitive operations in patients with schizophrenia who received metacognitive training

Abstract The study investigates with inductive content analysis the verbal manifestations of schizophrenia patients, their utterances within theory mind modules Metacognitive Training. Participants were recruited via psychiatrists’ referrals. Four small groups formed, two which consented to audio recording sessions. Only sessions these five and four patients respectively investigated. As participants dropped out, verbalisations seven eventually analysed. All had diagnosis (mean age: 43 years, male: two, female: five). contents transcribed, then independent coders did categorisation content; investigator triangulation ensured reliability validity study. a result, five-level hierarchy cognitive operations was revealed in bottom-up way. Patients attempted interpret not only facial expressions but expressive movements, too, during emotion recognition. When deducing state others, sought contextual information; moreover, burden illness stigmatisation became easy share. No signs awareness consequences inferred states found regarding future adjustment. Our hierarchical structure consistent related literature, specificities also revealed.
